If you haven’t noticed, we are entering the hot months. While this means it is a great time to soak up the sun, enjoy the pool, and get a tan, it is also time for bees and wasps to make their annual appearance. Living in Phoenix, all we seem to want to do is take a dip to stay cool, but it almost impossible to do so when you are taunted by the idea of getting stung.
Bees and Wasps: What’s the Difference?
There are many aspects that differentiate a bee from a wasp. This can vary from their size, appearance, and lifestyle.
Bees are usually about two and a half meters long in length. They also come in a variety of colors that range from yellow, to entirely black. The main difference in the appearance of a bee is that they are hairy. Bees also live in large colonies that can consist of sizes up to 75,000.
Most bees can only sting once in their lifetime and due afterward.
Wasps are a lot larger than bees. They range around 4 centimeters in length. Their appearance is usually black and has a smooth texture. The waste of a wasp is narrow and has a yellow pattern across it.
Unlike bees, wasps live in small colonies. They also hibernate during the winter months. Wasps can sting multiple times since the sting does not damage a wasp’s body. Unlike bees, a wasp can feed on different sources besides pollen and nectar.
